Eating nutritionally devoid processed foods leaves the body unsatisfied (even if its stomach is packed full) and on the hunt for something to provide the nutrition it needs. In turn, sweetened, salted, chemically enhanced processed foods spark cravings for more sugar, salt, crunch, etc., which results in an extremely vicious cycle of unnecessary eating. Soda (diet soda as well), with its phosphates, binds to whatever minerals are present in the food eaten (whole or processed) and eliminates them from the system, further depriving the body.
