Fitness Inspiration: Man Loses 130 Pounds With Extreme Yoga

May 22, 2012

Arthur Boorman, a disabled Veteran who weighed close to 300 pounds, was struggling with his disabilities, his weight, and the lack of control in his life. He had given up on himself, had settled for being unable to walk and “being a piece of furniture.” But then he discovered a work-out that would change his life, created by an ex-WWE superstar Diamond Dallas Page–a pumped-up form of yoga that would help him to lose 140 pounds and walk again.

It sounds like a story almost too far out to be true, but it is. And it’s one of the most inspiring stories I have heard in a long time.

Arthur Boorman, before and after

I had never heard of DDP before this story broke, but ABCNews explains

DDP was invented by Diamond Dallas Page, an extreme former wrestler who thought yoga could use a new intensity. We all know yoga can build strength and flexibility, but it can also be the key to significant weight loss by creating a slow, deep resistance to each movement, getting the body working against itself.

It also encourages…[followers to] change the way they eat, including more vegetables and less processed food. Key to keeping the weight off, they say, is that they lost it gradually. It took more than a year of sustained work for each of them.

Wow. First of all, can you imagine losing 140 pounds? That’s an entire person! I can barely lose 5…And going from unable to walk around without great difficulty and assistance to doing high-intensity yoga moves?? It’s just incredible. I needed some inspiration in this often dark, dark world and I really truly am moved by this amazing undertaking and accomplishment.

This is an inspiring story, but the photo of this “much fitter” guy on his head couldn’t help but remind me of all the scare articles I’ve read recently on yoga! While everyday people are still just discovering its benefits, the *fitness elite* have already been through their yoga phase and are now discovering that it can cause serious, sometimes debilitating injury if not practiced correctly (see –
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/08/magazine/how-yoga-can-wreck-your-body.html?pagewanted=all). I wouldn’t know about that, since I was always happy to hold downward dog for more than a couple minutes, but it may be a warning for yoga novices to take it slow, and find a good instructor…then hopefully they can come out looking like this guy AND stay without chronic injury (now if only someone would give this warning to trampoline jumpers!).

It’s very simple to find out any matter on web as compared to textbooks, as I found this article at this site.
