Media Spot-Lite: More Insulting Advertisements

March 2, 2012

It seems like every time you turn around, a company is insensitively disregarding and/or inaccurately portraying issues of weight, femininity, diversity…you name it. I know the old adage “any publicity is good publicity” but, yeesh. Get it together, advertisers!

The most recent campaign that is setting the internets ablaze is the Levi Curve ID jean ads which asserts that “hotness comes in all shapes and sizes” while featuring models all of one similar, slender body type.

Copyranter, an advertising watchdog blog that posted the magazine ad Wednesday, called it an insult to women size six and over.

“The company doesn’t seem to understand what ‘different’ means,” added Jezebel’s Anna North. “See, ‘hotness comes in all shapes and sizes,’ as long as those shapes are minute variations on the same thin, ponytailed woman.”

Oy. I really don’t have much to say on this that hasn’t already been said (by me in the past or the multitude of critics in the present), but I really wish things were being handled differently. It’s great that a company is finally catering to all types of customers, instead of perpetuating an ideal or a stereotype, but I just long for an advertising campaign that would reflect this mission. Why is that so difficult??

Here’s a clip from Ellen summing up the concept behind the Levi ID campaign. I do love me some Ellen…

Wha?? Oh man, I can’t say I’m not disappointed at the Ellen clip – I thought she was going to make a lot of scathing/humorous remarks about this campaign a la Bill Maher on moderate liberals. Instead it was just an Oprah-style pander session! Also, all the audience members chosen were, you’ll notice, not exactly plus-size (or over 25). I mean it’s not her fault, I could never really insult Ellen, just not what I expected.

Have you seen the Victoria Secret Commercials recently?
The tag line is – The new shape of sexy.

It looks strangely like the traditional shape of sexy to me…..

    Very confusing
