Food For Thought: The Hidden Evil In Salads

Salads. What does that word bring up for you? Let’s play word association. I say “SALAD” and you say…

Ok, let’s be honest: most people think words like “healthy” or “boring” or “smart choice,” right? But salads can be evil, if you’re not careful. They can be full of hidden fat and calories and, although delicious, can be quite detrimental to your health. I’m not kidding, y’all! Shape Magazine is here to educate us on the dangers of salad eating, and how to avoid the pitfalls in the land of salad.

If only all salads could be this nutritious and delicious...and FABULOUS!

Allow me to summarize:

Croutons=Evil!

Crispy Chicken=Evil!

Smelly Cheeses (except Feta and Goat)=Evil!

Dried Cranberries=Evil! (huh?)

Vinaigrette=Evil!

Nuts=Only Slightly Evil!

Before you get your holy water out to pour on salads everywhere, Shape has suggestions to counteract all the evil that salads can hold. So, breathe easy. And enjoy that next salad, worry free.

    I agree; every time I order a salad – at a restaurant – I ask them to put the croutons on the side. I end up eating all them up, without even touching the actual salad yet.

    I was going to say, any dried fruit = the devil! Dressings = horrible! Crunchy anything = GOODBYE! Ham = meh, not the best protein you could pick! Anything dripping in oil = fat loaded! Eating too much of those “grain salads” = carbo-loading!! Richard Simmons = you will gain 10 pounds after one bite, LOL!!!

    Iceberg lettuce = useless. Dried fruit = candy. Dressing: full of sugar, fake sugar, hydrogenated oils, artificial colors/flavors or all of the above. Corn = junk food.

    DARK greens like kale, collard greens or even baby spinach are a far better choice for the base. Crunchy, colorful vegs like red onion, all bell peppers, pea pods, carrots, edamame etc. are all delicious, interesting choices. Protein: go with a boiled egg if you’re at a salad bar. If making at home, plain boiled shrimp tossed with lemon juice, rosemary & a little garlic powder is a favorite, or grilled chicken or steak….go light on feta cheese, sliced avocado & olives….drizzle with olive oil & lemon juice…I’ve lived on this for years & haven’t gotten sick of it yet! 🙂

    I don’t know, I can’t help feeling a little uncomfortable with all this “healthy!” And “evil!” Talk. No cheese is completely “unhealthy” in moderation, just like no leafy green or fruit is “healthy” in extreme excess. Until we change this absolutist language and figure out that no rigid “do and don’t” list can or should apply to everyone, people are going to keep ordering salads piled with fried chicken or with only raw vegetables and lemon juice… isn’t it possible to aspire to some beautiful and tasty medium?
