A New Era of HangryHippo

September 20, 2011

My dearest readers–

Sometimes life gets in the way of blogging. I was meaning to post this yesterday, but got in late from a glorious weekend away before having to head to work and…

I mentioned last week that I have been doing a lot of reflecting about the direction this blog is taking, and have decided to make some changes. This is the first blog I have ever written, and learning about the blogging world has been a challenge inandofitself for me (and one that I still don’t fully understand, so if anyone has any tips….always appreciated). Now, at our almost 3 month mark, I’ve decided to give HangryHippo a bit of a make-over (but not of The Swan variety, don’t fret). Firstly, I have been overwhelmed by the quantity of posts I have been trying to produce (as this is not my full-time job unfortunately and researching and writing takes quite a bit of time) and, although there is literally a never-ending pile of information out there, I have felt that it is affecting the quality of my writing and posting topics. Focusing on weight day-in and day-out is also in many ways extremely upsetting–the negative ways it is dealt with in the media, the ceaseless appalling stories about the ways people treat their bodies and minds–and I have been feeling rather burnt-out about a topic that I am usually passionate about and committed to. To be honest, I myself have even put on weight (!…which I’ve worked really hard to then lose…) during this process, which I think was due to a combination of throwing my hands up at how ridiculous and futile the process sometimes seems and how stressful producing new and innovative content every day has been for me. So, to deal with all this, I am going to start posting on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and every other Sunday so that I can really focus on writing well-thought out posts that I am passionate about.

And on that note, many people close to me have noticed that I have been less opinionated and seemingly un-eager (I enjoy making up words) to really delve into issues than I am passionate about IRL (is that an accepted internet slang? In Real Life…? Have I become a person of the internets? Ugh). While there are many reasons for this (not the least being that I am still finding my voice online, have been overwhelmed trying to produce every day, am sometimes so fed up with the media/weight loss industry that I lose steam), I aspire for this blog to be an extension of the continuous research and effort that I put into learning as much as possible about weight, health, nutrition, and the media. I have found that humor is often an effective tool at delving into and/or coping with societal issues, and that has been my tact in dealing with the outrageous amount of focus and pressure that the media and weight loss industry places on us…and I want to continue on this course. But, my goal from here on is to have my posts focus on my passion for these issues that affect each and every one of us–weight and eating habits and health are not just issues that affect only those physically impacted, but influence each and every one of us on an individual or societal level. I was really blown away by the fascinating debate that the White Castle Lawsuit inspired, and that is really the purpose of this blog: to get people engaged in these issues that are shaping our media and our world.

I’m so grateful for all my readers and I look forward to an even more exhilarating future with all of you!
