Not New News, But Still Unbelievable: Obese Man Dies After 8 Months in His Recliner

July 1, 2011

The internet is a black hole. You find one thing of interest, click on it, which leads you to another fascinating time waster and suddenly, 6 hours later, you’re peeling your skin off your computer chair and wondering how humanity is still functioning and when it became light outside.

Or is it just me?

Anyways, today I decided that I would make good (debatable) use of all this internet “research” (ie procrastinating) and begin a new weekly series that I shall call “Not New News, But Still Unbelievable.” I will feature stories that I have found that might not necessarily be from this moment or extremely current, but still are shocking and important to learn about/from.

Today we have the truly tragic story of an obese man who died in 2009 after spending 8 months sitting and not moving from his recliner, “ballooning” from 550 to 800 pounds. Apparently the former Preacher had sustained a leg injury before he began his sit-in, and was “determined that faith would heal” him: “The man totally believed in God and in his healing. He read his Bible daily and he bent his full focus on God. And he was literally waiting and praying. He wanted so much to get up and tell everyone what Jesus done,” said his wife. This poor woman daily cleaned the chair where he also slept and used the bathroom, and when she finally decided to call for an ambulance, firefighters had to cut his body from the chair as he was actually physically stuck to it. He later died in the hospital, and his wife apparently has “no regrets”: “If I feel anything right now, it’s envy for him because I wish he’d have taken me with him.”

Wow. This is like straight out of a horror movie. What a nightmare. A lot of the comments on the youtube video are to the effect of “God said he will help those who help themselves…you can’t just sit there!” or “Taking LA-Z-BOY to a whole new level.” I just find this story so incredibly sad and avoidable. What are your thoughts when you see something like this?

dear god. (no pun intended) I think this is a sad commentary on so many things wrong in our country. I tend to have little sympathy for those prayer-medicine types.

    I just can’t understand this.
It is sad and confusing and then just befudiling. I can’t understand if he was suicidal, in denial, just without hope…? I don’t think any religion teaches for you to do nothing an wait for god to solve your problems… so don’t understand if he had misguided faith or just felt powerless himself. I find it disturbing that his wife is jealous that he got to die and she has to live?
